Wisdom is there, but it needs a lot of gospel seasoning

I deeply appreciated Mrs. Peace's chapter on how to handle long-term sin on the part of a husband. That chapter alone makes this book worth reading for anyone working with wives. She takes the countercultural realities of Christian living and deftly applies them to a delicate and confusing situation brilliantly. This book was first written in 1995 by someone who knew Jay Adams personally. Because of these factors, it has the same strengths and weaknesses as much of the first generation of biblical counseling. For example, there are several charts featuring sinful thoughts versus godly thoughts. Out of the >50 godly thoughts, only a handful were directed to God and his grace; the rest were focused on doing the right thing and focusing on good stuff. Much of the application Mrs. Peace recommends would be possible for a moral woman to perform without ever turning to Christ or the power of the Holy Spirit. This doesn't make her advice wrong, just dangerous without the right reader's mindset. Interestingly, Mrs. Peace mentioned in an appendix how much she enjoyed writing the chapter on loneliness because she had focused strongly on our relationship with God himself. Clearly, the author is a wonderful, godly woman, but this book should only be read in conjunction with something like the Gospel Primer to avoid burnout and unconsciously developing a legalistic works focus.

Great Resource!

I was introduced to this book as a newlywed in a church small group 15 years ago. It was so helpful for me to read personally. I have used this book over and over with women who need help with struggling marriages- and their approach to their husbands. It's a great resource to use in Counseling or in a small group format.

Excellent Wife changes marriages

This book is one of my most used resources in counseling women. Most who have read and applied these principles to their lives were amazed at how their husbands responded to their changes. Many women are hearing these biblical concepts for the first time. It has challenged me in my marriage to be a better wife and to please God. Thank you Martha for a great resource.
